About Us

Debbie Jervis
Hands On

“A long term aspiration of mine has been to establish my own business. Coupled with my late mother’s wishes this gave me the purpose and drive to bring this to fruition. Hands On aims to bridge the communication gap between hearing and D/deaf communities. Being Profoundly Deaf and BSL being my first language allows me to deliver courses with first-hand knowledge and experience together with a friendly and enthusiastic approach.

These courses aim to accomplish a better integration of the hearing and D/deaf communities by improving awareness, understanding of D/deaf culture and establishing effective communication.”

I have a small dedicated team which I work with on a regular basis. Their tasks include, but are not limited to:

    • Administration tasks – Translation from English-BSL and BSL-English, of emails, power point presentations, course and assessment paperwork and general paperwork, including invoices and accounts. Telephone calls and text messaging are also translated.
    • Online research, promotion and training – Translation from English-BSL and BSL-English.
    • Communication tasks – Translation from English-BSL and BSL-English, in Deaf Awareness and Taster courses or coffee mornings, in class, in tutorials, in student practise sessions, at open days, in business meetings and staff training.
    • Our team has 4 fully qualified BSL interpreters and are used for more in depth translation in important meetings or events, such as open days or in training.

All of us work closely together to ensure the business runs smoothly and all potential students are replied to and tasks are completed, promptly.
